Annual General Meeting AGM and Annual Reception

Doesn't time fly when you are having fun?

It is time to look ahead to the Annual General Meeting at the very beginning of June and organise ourselves for the year that follows. Some bookings have already been made for further events this year but there is still plenty of scope for the new committee to arrange more events.

The AGM of the Association will be held in the Penthouse, New Zealand House, on Tuesday 1st June at 6.30 p.m. It will start promptly to properly precede the Annual Reception, which will follow immediately after at approximately 7.00 p.m.

The Agenda, minutes of the last AGM, and copies of the Accounts for 1998/1999 will be available at the meeting.

Nominations are invited for the posts of Chairman, Honorary Auditor, Honorary Secretary, Honorary Treasurer, and the Committee for the year 1999/2000. Send nominations signed by the proposer, seconder, and nominee to the Honorary Secretary at the Association's address. Nominations may also be made from the floor at the meeting. Please note that as Joanna Saywell is heading back to New Zealand in the very near future, she is unable to stand for a further term as Secretary.

We are all grateful for the time and effort that the Committee has put in over the past year, particularly Selwyn Aickin, in organising the website and pressurising New Zealand for funding.

Please come along and take part in the meeting. This event is your best opportunity to make your views known on what we should do, what we should be, and anything else relevant to our function.

.... and the Annual Reception

As is our custom, the Annual Reception releases the members who have toiled through the AGM into the agreeable task of meeting together again in the splendid Penthouse with all the others who have come along, and to enjoy a time of pleasant eating, drinking, and discourse with old and new friends. Be sure to be there too. Gather your guests and reply promptly please by returning the enclosed slip to the Honorary Secretary as soon as you can.

Note the details.

Combined Technical Talk

A few years ago we had the year of the train. We unintentionally seemed to organise trips and talks about the many and varied rail projects on the go at that time, Now we have entered the nuclear age. Last year's talk was on the project to discover a cleaner, more environmentally acceptable, means of nuclear energy production. We have just been to see a conventional nuclear power station and seen their side of the coin.

Now IEAust, our hosts this year, are pleased to announce that the topic for this year's combined technical talk is, "Some aspects of the relationship between society and the disposal of radioactive waste".

Their speaker is lan J Duncan FTSE FAusiMM FIEAust. He is accompanied by Mr Miles Rotherham, who knows a bit about the European nuclear fuel cycle.

Mr Duncan has supplied this synopsis of his talk.

"Current generations continue to accumulate radioactive wastes but have failed to establish a means for its disposal, having rightfully set aside ocean dumping and trading of wastes to less developed countries. Yet this problem can be resolved within the field of geography as it incorporates:

(a) the politics of siting and the NIMBY phenomenon,
(b) risks, rewards and costs for each segment of society and
(c) perspectives of TIME which impact differently on society and industry.

The House of Lords has recently completed an 18 month study into the Management of Nuclear Waste and its findings were published in March. The report quantifies the UK waste issue and criticises the past performance, particularly of UK NIREX, the designated disposal organisation. The report outlines the way forward for the UK and this will be discussed."

This promises to be a lively discussion, of interest to any engineers who have had to consider the environmental impact of their projects.

Ian Duncan is a mechanical engineer, born in Kalgoorlie, Western Australia, 1939. He started his career as an engineer with Dunlop Rubber Australia Ltd where he stayed for 10 years. He joined Western Mining Corporation in 1971 and stayed with them until 1996, progressing from Operations Manager, Exploration, to Chairman and General Manager (WMC) Olympic Dam Marketing Pty. Ltd. (During this period the Olympic Dam project was commissioned and was expanded twice). In 1994 he became President Olympic Dam Marketing, and Chairman of the Uranium Institute. (The Uranium Institute is a London based International body specialising in the civil nuclear fuel cycle.)

Mr Duncan is currently studying for a Doctorate of Philosophy at the School of Geography, University of Oxford. His topic is "Some aspects of the relationship between society and the disposal of radioactive waste". This study is expected to be completed by mid-2000.

Other UK Association News

Visit to Kew Bridge Steam Museum

As I write this, I am looking forward to our trip around Kew Museum. Fred Hughes is coming with us so I know that we will have the advantage of the guidance of not one but two experts. I will have to ask him whether he has ever presented Blue Peter inside the workings. Our thanks to Brian Anderson for organising his event.

Subscriptions

Our financial year ended at the end of March and many of you have already renewed your subscriptions. Since I will be handing over to a new Secretary at the AGM it would be excellent if I could have received the majority of the subscriptions by then. Otherwise you will need to send your payment to the new Secretary's address before he (or she) deletes you from our mailing list.

Funding From New Zealand

We are pleased to be able to report that, contrary to our fears, we have managed to obtain a nominal increase in our funding from IPENZ head office. A new precedent has been set whereby we no longer receive a capitation fee but do receive payment towards branch activities such as visits and technical talks. This should give us a firmer footing when it comes to organising events as we will not be subject to the vagaries of the perceived UK membership which fluctuates from year to year.

IPENZ UK Association Website

Due to increasing frustrations with the previous ISP, Selwyn Aickin has now opened a 'free' account with FreeServe (operated by Dixons Group) on behalf of the IPENZ UK Association and moved our website to their server. The new URL for the website is:

http://www.ipenzuk.freeserve.co.uk

which is a bit more convenient than both the previous two URLS. There are re-directors at both the old addresses so people can still get to the website using the old URLS.

There is also a POP3 email postbox with the account that we can use for 'official' Association email.

We are currently in the process of setting up email addresses for the committee so that in a short period of time, you will be able to send email direct to the person responsible without having to change your addresses whenever there is a change to the committee.

Whilst on the subject of the Internet, the website:

http://www.thepaperboy.com

has links to most of the world's on-line newspapers, including 20 or so from New Zealand.

Local Authority Elections

Our congratulations are extended to Brian Anderson for winning a seat in the local elections for Ashford North. Well done Brian, we need more engineers represented in the political arena.

News From New Zealand

New Driving Licence

Law changes mean all drivers on New Zealand roads are now required by law to carry their driving licences with them. The requirement came into effect on Monday and applies to all licences, not just the new photo licences now being phased in. Drivers who do not carry their licence will face a $55 fine.

Rotorua turned from a sauna into a cold bath

Torrential rain caused flooding in Rotorua early on Saturday and sparked a brief Civil Defence emergency. The continuous downpour caused extensive flooding throughout the city and lakes areas, and led to the first-ever cancellation of the Rotorua marathon - now into its 35th year. Around 100 mm of rain fell overnight in the city, causing surface flooding up to 1.5 metres deep in places. The five-hour emergency was lifted after members of Rotorua's civil defence team flew over the region in a helicopter to assess the damage. While low-lying areas remained under water, it was agreed no people or buildings were in danger.

Quality Wine Crop

After a dry summer and warm autumn, New Zealand's wine harvest should produce similar tonnage to last year but with a better flavour than the highly rated 1998 vintage, especially in the reds and Chardonnays.

Experts In Pond Construction Required

Construction of a pond at a Wellington landfill so children can learn to fish has hit a snag, with fears the design might literally produce poached trout. Separate holding and fishing ponds have been dug in a 330sq m area behind the Happy Valley landfall recycling centre. They were due to open in September. The Project organisers, Wellington Flyfishers Club, budgeted on $20,000 last year for clay or rubber bases to hold the water. But project co-ordinator, Strato Cotsilinis, said the club had since discovered such bases meant the water would get too hot during summer, endangering the planned 1000 two-year-old rainbow trout. The ponds now had to be concreted, increasing the cost to about $30,000. (Ed. Any Comments?)
